Philadelphia, PA — Officials of the Manayunk Development Corporation (MDC), ADVENT, the Philadelphia Mummers Association, and U.S. Congressman Robert A. Brady announced that the Philadelphia Mummers Mardi Gras Parade is scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 10 am until 12 noon along the length of Manayunk’s famous Main Street retail and restaurant corridor. This family-focused celebration of the music and pageantry of the Mummers was conceived as a means to keep Philadelphia’s renowned Mummers’ tradition alive and well.

In recent years, largely as result of the national economic downturn and the resulting cuts to the city’s budget, the Mummers Association has been hard hit economically, causing a reduction in the ranks of Mummers and their performance clubs, and necessitating a shortened parade route on New Year’s Day, the Mummers’ grandest annual stage. Today’s announcement of the Philadelphia Mummers Mardi Gras Parade was met with jubilation by all parties involved.

Manayunk was looking for another signature event to showcase their vibrant community. Downtown Main Street offers the perfect setting for a family friendly parade that will showcase the musical sounds of the Mummers. The goal is for this to become an annual tradition of things to do in Manayunk.

One of the Mummers biggest supporters is Congressman Robert A. Brady who has pledged his full support for the event. The Congressman views Main Street Manayunk as a perfect performance space for a late winter event involving the Philadelphia Mummers. Adding another Mummers parade in the city of Philadelphia will help strengthen the Mummers brand and connect the iconic performers to a younger generation. Mummers Mardi Gras will offer a real opportunity to expand on a quintessential Philadelphia tradition.
