I agree with all said here, it was always a start in South Philly Parade..I too had family that marched in this parade and it’s sad to see tradition pushed to the way side. Although I have to watch it streaming, Thank You PHL17, but I know this effects the people in South Philly. I know most won’t agree with me but I loved when it was all men in the parade, it was funny to see men dressed up as women. I guess everything changes…sad
i can not find a correct route for this parade above it is going down broad now kyw says NO only parkway, jfk & 15th and 16th. Why is the tradition of broad st gone so sad!!
Come on Jim Kenney, bring this parade back to South Philly— where it belongs. Performing in front of the hospitals for the patients. All of the residents loved hosting the open house parties. Start in S Philly and winding up on 2 Street, That’s tradition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree from ahold south Phillips comic
I haven’t marched on Broad St. for 35+ years. I was involved with Pural Comic Division. I can completely understand all the bitching and moaning about the parade route. It should start in South Philly and move to Center City for judging at City Hall. I understand that lack of bodies on the street is a big problem/concern. I think that I may have a very simple answer to the problem….. Make multiple judging locations. One at Methodist Hospital, one at Samson St. and the final at City Hall. All placement scoring is based on the scores given at all judging stations, either averages or totals. All groups, whether comic, wenches, fancy or string band need all three scores posted to be in the running. Done deal, everyone is happy. Center city get the tourists and the TV dollars and the rest of South Broad St. gets friends, family and tradition. And believe it or not, this would work in either direction, north to south or south to north, pick a direction, alternate odd years north even years south. It really wouldn’t matter. EVERYBODY WINS!!!!!!!!
the new parade route is terrible, nutter and his band of merry clowns have screwed the pooch again…I go for an hour just because I always drive in from the suburbs but hate squeezing down by city hall with all the drunk teenagers…ugh…not fun anymore
CB
My family have been in the stringbands for over 50 years – the best part of the day was walking around Marconi Plaza – seeing all your friends, taking pictures! I also miss watching the bands at Broad & Shunk – please bring the parade back to South Philly – keep this tradition alive!!!! Also, being judged 1st then parading sucks – you need the crowd behind you, the thrill of the drill spots & the adrenaline rush of approaching the judging area! Make everyone happy, go back to the tradition of the mummers parade!
The problem with the parade and why the crowd died is because in the 90s the brigade’s use to march and play . and there was 1 after another. But In the last 15 years the brigade’s just walk by.. No music nothing I remember as a teenager in early 90s there was so many brigade’s and they all use to entertain . and the crowds were filled from curb. To the wall all the way from Oregon to mifflin . its like going out to dinner if some food is good but most did nothing for you. Why would you go. Well through the years people just stopped going . not trying to sound like a rude butt head . because I love the mummers I even marched a couple times . but how many people feel the same way . the delay between brigade’s is really long and once they arrive its a hit or miss . with more misss… But south. Broad is where it belongs . are mayor is all about the tourists dollar’s . and that’s only reason its in center city . because the crowd is the same light except in some places . so what’s different .. Just the people watching . Mummers belong in south philly
Bring it back to south philly the original way lining up on Oregon and down Broad street to city hall. This years parade route was horrible. Once they were judged some clubs didn’t even go down Broad street. Bring it back the way it should be. If it doesn’t change I heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t come next year. People get their families together and it isn’t easy with kids. And this year it just wasn’t worth it!!
I don’t live in Philly anymore, but the route is crap!!!! The parade starts in South Philly and marches up Broad Street….. That’s what it should be!!!
I do still live in philly and I totally agree! It’s a joke and unfortunately I won’t go to another parade. I know some mummers agreed to the change but the mayor and councilmen care more about downtown & and waterfront than other parts of the city (i.e. S Philly)
This is so disheartening. Tradition is Tradition, means doing the same thing year after year, South Philly and all the open houses, and the families that meet in groups on the corners along Broad St. in South Philly. I always knew where to find my friends along the route. All the businesses along Broad Street now taking a big hit, Methodist and St. Agnes Hospitals where all the bands performed for the patients – this is all gone now. It’s very depressing, and I for one will not be going to Broad Street, however, 2nd Street watch out, it’s going to be a big party there. Unless the Mayor puts a stop to that too! Now all of a sudden they are trying to make this a multi-cultural parade, now unless they dress as Mummers and perform like Mummers, they have no place in this parade. Newly Elect Mayor Kenney, take it back the way it was and should always be. And to Coleen, who hates the parade in Center City and thinks it’s a freak show – go back to where you came from, cause your obviously not from Philly. Also, to put it out there, the City has put an alert out yesterday that a number of groups will be protesting at 1:00PM at the Judging area for Black Lives Matter, $15.00 an hr Minimum Wage and a few others – so beware and watch your back if you are in Center City. My dad was a Mummer his entire life. I think he will be turning in his grave this year. Sorry Dad.
Love to see the BLM try to come down broad …..they’d get a beat done worse than from the police
I remember going from my grandmother’s house at 19th & Wolf to the parade, visiting “strangers” who invited us in for pepper pot soup and then heading back to the parade. Wonderful memories that seem to be gone due to the new parade route.
Mayor Jim Kenney, please bring our south philly tradition back where it belongs…. The Parade Starts at Broad n Oregon and Marches North, even if you want to stop it at Washington Ave, It’s a South Philly Tradition give it BACK !!!
Put the parade back the way it always was
Starting at oregon and going north
Hold on, am I reading this right? Starting at City Hall and marching south to Washington? Philly is killing me with these modifications to tradition. Traditions are made by doing the same thing year after year…..like starting in SOUTH PHILLY and marching NORTH to City Hall! And nothing beats seeing those beautiful string bands under the lights. Come on Philly, get it right. And while I am on a rant, I sure hope PHL17 steps up their coverage.
This is the dumbest route there city
Has ever concocted .when I had the
Plkeasdure of being in the parade for
Over 22 years I truerly enjoyed the
Walk up broad Street. The philly people
Welcomed you. No matter what band or
How good you were..we had the pleasure
Of stopping at Hahnaman hospital for
The patients doctors and nurses to enjoy
Then at a catholic school for the nuns
And priests since black has gotten into
Power its like they want to dump the
Cultural that has been Philadelphia’s
Since early 1900s …change route change
This change that. Not even the show of shows is in philly anymore totally stupid
The convention center wass the place to go for years not Atlantic city…disgrace !!!
Giver the mummers back their parents arade route from broad and Oregon to 15nth and market !!! A disgruntled fasn and ex mummer. Philly government should be ashamed of itself !!!
Total disgrace. This parade has been a south Philly tradition from the day it began over 60 years ago. Why not perform at city hall. March south down Broad and sell tickets to the Linc for a finale. The revenue would be great for the city and everyone wins and is happy!!!
South Philly you can have the parade, the Linc is a great location for it! Center City is not.
Sell tickets it’s always been free once again take something from people who love and go to the parade and make so only people who have money can go. Once again spoken like an idiot with money I guess!!!!
As a lifelong South Philadelphian, I had always opened my house to friends and family on New Years Day for the parade. That tradition has been ruined. My suggestion for the parade route is this: Start at Broad and Washington Ave, march south to Lincoln Financial Field for judging. Sell tickets to the Linc at first come first served for $5. The city will gain revenue from the concessions stand. You have tried every thing else, why not this ???????
The Cara Liom Wench Brigade will be marching from City Hall to Washington Ave and we WILL NOT forget the people whom are waiting at Washington Ave. So, be ready to celebrate and ring in the new years with us. The new parade route is a challenge and while we are not 100% happy with it, we are going to make the best of it. We look forward to seeing you all out there on January 1st and will not disappoint. Thank you for being loyal to the parade and coming out to Broad Street. Happy Holidays from Cara Liom.
Thank you!!!!!! Myself and a group of eager South Philly kiddos that will be waiting and cheering you on!!!!!
Thanks for your positive spin on the situation, Cara Liom! After reading your message I am thinking that I might have to figure out a way to get in town! Have they ever considered (shudder) going south on Broad–maybe from Washington Avenue and judging at Marconi Plaza?
Mambo, while we do not have a decisive say in the route, we are open to any changes. The wench brigades will march from Oregon Ave all the way to wherever you guys stop coming if we were allowed. We CHERISH the time we get to celebrate with the fans on the street, no matter how many or what location. The best way for change is to continue speaking about your disappointment. Know that people do read these message boards. We are on your side and want it back to where it once was. Thanks for your interest and spirit, see you 5 days on Broad Street. Cara Liom
I need a description for 3 bands. I make posters for the wenches and strings every year. Strings based on theme but descriptions are vague this year. I only need a few words to get going. Bands areGreater Kensington (The Experiment). Durning (All Dollared Up), and Ferko (Fields of Screams). If you could give me any help I would sincerely appreciate it. Pat Davis
I am a New Yorker with tons of family in South Philadelphia and some of my greatest childhood memories would be going to Philly for New Years, standing on the corner of Broad and Snyder and watching the spectacle South Philly calls the Mummers. Went last year and was more than disappointed in the new route the parade takes. Was hoping to give my kids the same memories of the parade that I had, but unfortunately it fell way short. Will be going down to Philly again this year for New Years but will probably opt out of going to the parade. So sad.
The Parade Route Sucks! What’s Next Get Rid Of Wenchs? Good Luck With That WHO DAT !!
Put the Parade BACK to its original route marching North on Broad. Last year I stood @ Broad/Wash until 2PM and SAW NO PARADE AT ALL. This down route is a Mess & Disgrace!!! It is a disgrace that Phila city government tries to Kill Off the Mummers Parade. New Orleans City strongly supports Mardi Gras. NYC gov strongly supports the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade + all ethic day parades. Los Angeles strongly supports the Rose Bowl Parade. ONLY Philadelphia and its selfish greedy government tries to Kill Off its own Philadelphia Culture, Arts, Music, Pagentry, and HISTORY by trying to Kill Off the Mummers Parade. SHAME ON YOU PHILADELPHIA GOVERNMENT. UP on Broad. Down on 2nd. SUPPORT THE MUMMERS AS THE ARTISTIC GEMS THEY ARE.
COULDNT AGREE MORE…..PHILLY IS A 2ND CLASS CITY BECAUSE OF POLITICS….ONLY IN PHILLY DO WE POOP ON OUR OWN TRADITIONS SMH…..BRING IT BACK TO SOUTH BROAD….PUT THE GIANT FLATSCREENS AT WOLF N SHUNK STREETS WHERE ATTENDANCE NEVER LACKED…….INVITE THE FOOD TRUCKS TO SOUTHERN SCHOOL YARD AND MARCONI PLAZA….HAVE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BANDS BETWEEN THE CLUBS(NOT JUDGED)……I’LL BE THERE REGARDLESS JUST LIKE I HAVE MY WHOLE LIFE….BUT REALLY HOPE THE NEW REGIME COMING INTO CITY HALL BRINGS THIS PARADE BACK TO WHERE IT BELONGS..!!!!
The new route is horrible!! Go back to the old way!! The Fancy Brigades could care less about tradition !! It’s all about winning ! Some don’t wear their full suits or hats. Disgraceful!!! New leadership is needed in the fancy brigade association!!! Can you say dance recital !!
The New Parade Route in its Second Year Needs Some Improvement
But it is a Necessary at This Point in Mummers History. Dwindling Attendance in Most Sections in South Philadelphia made the Parade a Death March going North on Broad Street. And with the Parade Starting Later. People Are Coming out to See The Comics and Wench Brigades. This is the Traditional and Fun Part of the Annual Strut
WRONG Rocco. We stand at Broad & Shunk every year and the crowed is great.
You can’t even walk up or down broad street. Maybe you should really go to the parade instead of sitting in your house.
I am a native of Philadelphia and miss the Mummers but I am flying in to see all of you this year I am so excited and want to thank you for all the hard work and making Philadelphia the place to be on New Years day….. SEE YOU SOON BLESSINGS
Mike,
Like last year, Broad and Shunk is not part of the parade route.
Mummers parade needs to go back to its original route.
Go back to original route please and let bands perform along the way. We have been at Broad and Pine for over 30 years and last year not one band stopped for us. Disgrace !!!
I think it is a disgrace that most of the people who started, continue and make up this parade love and work in South Philadelphia and none of the South Philadelphia people can see it without going into town when on fact they are home preparing food and libations that bring in the outsiders to bring more money to the city that has completely destroyed a family tradition.
I remember going to Broad street to see your favorite patade, and all the club’s had someone you know in them, going back around to someone’s house for food and potty breaks and back out again. Everyone opened their homes to anyone because South Philly is a family and on new years everyone is family…
And the city so sets why it is the way it is, because kids today are looking the family unit traditions and asked to,leave the neighborhoods that love and protect them in order to continue tradition.
I am a past mummer and my family has been marching for over 50 years.
Missing it the way it was. Hopefully, Kenney will reconsider next year….
All the fuss about diversifying the parade and only one group joined the Philadelphia division? Ha!!!
The only group confirmed at this point is the San Mateo Carnavaleros. There could be more groups, but I don’t expect many more. The Philadelphia Division only has a 1/2 hour slot at the beginning of the parade. It’s the same about of time as the Fancy Division.

This new route and all the changes have ruined a great tradition that ultimately belonged to south Philly. The parade has been turned I to a tourist attraction for all the out-of-city people, which is fine bc that is what has/does still make up 80% of the center city crowd. But it’s a damn shame that the south Philly blue collar hardworking people who can’t make into center city cannot watch the parade first hand and cannot carry on a tradition that had been around for many many generations! South Philly makes up 85% of the mummers memebers and yet the Broad street route has been cut out, doesn’t make any sense at all, “it wasn’t broken so it shouldn’t have been changed!” All mummers clubs should unite and march back up broad street from center city back into south Philly! Give back to our biggest supporters, the neighborhood folk!!! WHODAT!!
South Philly you can have the parade back if it were up to some of us Center City residents, we aren’t interested at all and don’t want it on our street.
Regarding the parade route .Though the event is performative it is not a stationary performance , it is a parade , a procession , it is about the moving ,marching and momentum. It is not about the crowds or the prizes(though both are welcomed) , its about the act of moving with your people, your gang, people you know and people you meet along the way, in a surge of whirling delight, thats the magic of it . We seem to spinning away from ourselves!

I am a native Philadelphian now living in Atlanta GA. Is there any way we can get the parade broadcast down here?
You can stream the parade online at phl17.com
I am from Philly originally but now living in Atlanta, GA. Is there any way I can get the parade down here?
Why are the fancy brigades back in the parade. They messed it all up last year. For years they didn’t want to be in the parade and now that it is reversed they feel they should be. Keep them out of it. last year waited for hours and only saw three string bands all because those pre madonnas feel like marching. If they want to march then they should perform outside like everyone else.
Oh you are so off the mark. The brigades always did the street after there 1st performance. The problem was due to back up they would have to go back to the cc for the 2ND judged show.
The parade route is PATHETIC
I have 3 children n they r all in different clubs it hard to see all of them we need to bring it back to broad at to south philly
Have the fancy brigades been removed from the parade route itself?
I believe the Fancy Brigades join the outdoor portion of the parade after the noon show and intersperse between the groups marching from city hall.
Why are the wenches going before the Comic Clubs?
I’m in North New Jersey. How/ on what tv station can I watch it????
You can stream the parade online at phl17.com
Would be nice if the city gave this better support
The mummers parade is one giant freak show.
Does anyone have the themes for the wenches and string bands?
The official themes are usually released closer to NYD. Once they are released, they will be on the website.
Wonder if the new Mayor next year will change it back to it’s original parade route in some manner? This is a terrible thing to take from the people whoin South Philly………….
