Mummers Hall of Famer, Steve Highsmith wrote an interesting article on his website today proposing a new Heritage Division in the Mummers Parade.
Steve describes the Heritage Division as follows:
Let’s postulate that it’s time to create a new division that does NOT add to the length of the parade, but which preserves the historical significance of the parade, allows some clubs an opportunity to have a less financially stressful year and gives the public more of what they want.
Steve’s article proposes a solution for the Mummers clubs who struggle yearly because of finances and the time constraints of their membership. I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to read Steve’s article and to vote on the poll on his website.

I like this idea. Not being a mummer, but a “BIG” fan, I think this would you work really well in the string band division. When you look at the past 10 years, 7 bands have never finished in the top 10. If you split the division by having the Top 10 march in the string band portion, and then the others in some type of heritage division, with the top band moving up the next year, you could add some excitement for the bands that can’t compete with the power bands. It’s an interesting idea, which maybe could bring back some people to march in the parade that have left due to various reasons
